Elisa Baker Indicted On Drug Trafficking Charges


CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A federal grand jury in Charlotte indicted Elisa Baker, the stepmother of Zahra Baker, on drug trafficking charges Wednesday, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Baker conspired with others to distribute oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam from 2006 to October 2010, the indictment alleges. She maintained homes in Granite Falls, Hudson and Hickory for the purpose of distributing drugs, according to the indictment.

Baker was charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, three counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and three counts of maintaining a place for the purposes of distributing a controlled substances. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Baker is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her stepdaughter.
